KNOXVILLE, TN – Major Indya Kincannon called a meeting to order with the Knoxville City Council on June 28th, 2022 at 6 p.m. where they reviewed member appointments, the social innovation challenge and more. 8 members were present for the called meeting.

To begin, the police advisory and review committee were able to confirm a few reappointed members. Which include: Leitia Flores, Johnathan Haskell and Reico Hopewell. Following that, the nominees of the Major’s Disability committee were reviewed.

Major Agenda

Earlier, Major Kincannon had started a social innovation challenge for the youth around April.

The main goal is to find the newest ways to help Knoxville speak up about their mental health struggles. Major Kincannon sees that not everyone has access to government aid agencies.

Through this social innovation, Major Kincannon is working towards a community based lifestyle that promotes regular activities about mental health.

Following that, the Major’s project has collaborated with several agencies in Knoxville. These agencies include: City of Knoxville, United Way of Greater Knoxville, University of Tennessee College of Social Work, Mental Health Association, Knoxville Chamber and Knoxville Area Urban League.

The City Council adjourned that the City Empowerment Budget of 25,000 for the Social Innovation Project will also go towards the United Way of Greater Knoxville.

Zoning Appeals Agenda

The council then moved on the zoning and appeals as listed on the agenda. Hopeful Housing was approved in Knoxville and Major Kincannon approved of funding with Willis Towers Watson Southeast, Inc. A minor home repair program called Neighborhood Housing being issued with land expansions and renovations.

Also, Block grants will be provided for the Atlantic Avenue Sidewalk Project and the Knoxville Area Urban League will fund an extension of the development of said Block Grants. Urban League funding supports a RISE program that aids with skill training for workspaces.

The council also discussed the Tennessee Department of Transportation hoping to purchase 4 electric buses with charging stations. All documents from the Federal Transit Administration are currently under review.

Government Workers

To Finish up the meeting, Major Kincannon signed agreement with Pyro Shows to provide labor, equipment and materials to perform displays for the
Festival on the 4th on July 4.

They also announced the approval of pensions that were granted to former employees of Knoxville General Government.

Finally, The Knoxville City Council Meeting was adjourned with the starting dates of elected employees.
